There were actually quite a few prototype M16 models before the M16A1. The M16A1 was just the first official adoption (not the first issue, even). In fact, the XM16E1 prototype model saw more action in Vietnam than the A1. The A1 wasn’t introduced until ’67, and didn’t see issue until ’69. Most of it’s use was by Marines and SEALs, it didn’t see wide Army issue until the late 70s, The E1 had been around since ’64 and was used throughout the war.
